Ahead was the death of his mother,
When winged creatures would flutter off
Of etched plates, to sit forever, head in hand,
Symbols dark and unable to use their tools.

But those prints were years away from this,
When watercolor dispersed a Virgin’s treasure,
To every blade of grass, every numbered sparrow,
And every bud in Durer’s cathedral of turf.
